2000-05-18 until 0000-00-00
Southern Flagship Institution
Cape Town, ,
ZA South Africa
On 18 May 2000 the Southern Flagship Institution (incorporating the
Michaelis Collection, South African Cultural History Museum, South African
Museum, South African National Gallery and William Fehr Collection) will
celebrate International Museums Day with events including open days at
various museums, temporary exhibitions, workshops and guided tours.
In order to raise public awareness of the importance of museums in our
society the International Council of Museums (ICOM) proclaimed 18 May as
International Museums Day. The motto of International Museums Day, ever
since the initiative was launched in 1977, is that 'Museums are an
important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and
development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among peoples'.
The theme for International Museums Day this year, 'Museums for peace and
harmony in society', was chosen by the Advisory Committee to reflect the
United Nations' decision to proclaim the year 2000 'International Year for
a Culture of Peace'.
