"[Unoder] - experiments in words, images and sounds"
2000-05-26 until 2000-08-27
Museum of Contemporary Art, Roskilde
[Unoder] - experiments in words, images and sounds is the first exhibition of the museum's permanent collection since it was founded in 1991. [Unoder] really means bad habits or unconventional behaviour, but also signifies notes or signs (in music as in art and the world at large) not following the beaten path. The collection consists of sound-, video- and intermedia-works. Video-documentation is an important part of the inter-artistic and inter-aesthetic research that the museum performs into the development of experimental artforms since the 1950s.
The collection follows the path of art that begins with the Futurist noise-manifesto and Dada-poetry, via concrete poetry and electronic music, Fluxus and conceptual art, to contemporary art today reflecting on the public's social and cognitive values. Thus, the collection is more an area of research than art of a certain kind or with specific period-characteristics. The area consists as much of artworks as of ideas. The exhibition presents the Undertones and Overtones of the artworks and ideas of the collection: The Undertones (at the groundfloor) is first and foremost Fluxed art, that is art descending from Fluxus -ideas and -inheritance, but not necessarily belonging to it in a strict arthistorical sense. And the Overtones (at the first floor) presents soundart in a purer experimental state - historically as in our audioteque and very contemporary as in our sound-studio [Krydsfelt]. Also, an important and very poetic Overtone at [Unoder] is the drawings of Carl Fredrik Reuterswärd, entitled On the Other Hand.
The exhibition has developed both on a textual and a spatial level, intertwined. In the exhibition-catalogue we proudly present a report from the textual work, which has been performed by the members of the museum's own research-network. The Catalogue thus serves as a presentation of the ideas and fields of expertise that our museum can offer.
