On 8 June 2000, the Institute of International Visual Arts (inIVA) will
launch three digital artworks for x-space, a
virtual gallery and online project space. For x-space, inIVA commissions
emerging artists from diverse cultural backgrounds to create web-specific
works, supported by web designers. Like many of the previous x-space
artists, Katrine Hjelde, Una Walker and Freddie Robins are new to the
internet as an artistic medium; the collaborative process, plus the artists
ideas-based approach and their experience of working in other media, has led
to the creation of some innovative digital artworks.
Katrine Hjelde: White
Hjelde is a painter and site-specific installation artist whose work looks
at notions of architectural and conceptual space. White investigates the
space between the exhibition of art in static, defined venues and the
relative freedom of the internet.
Freddie Robins: Bugbear
Freddie Robins, a textile artist, explores the similarities between
knitting, computers and the internet in this intriguing piece which invites
the viewer to make their own 3D garments.
Una Walker: Metaphor is the key
Una Walkers previous work in installation considers military architecture,
warfare and freedom of expression. Drawing on imagery used in 16th century
war manuals, Metaphor is the key explores the overlap between these
subjects, the internet and computer technology.
In 2000-2001, inIVA will be commissioning three artists to work on x-space
projects; please note that the deadline for submissions from artists wishing
to participate is 30 June 2000.
