Eduardo Padilha's practice crosses the mediums of drawing, film-making and
sculptural installation. Using found materials, he layers surfaces and
inverts images to create an exquisite sense of unease, dislocation and
longing.
Influenced by growing up on the border of Uruguay and Brazil,
Padilha investigates how cultural icons become invested with social and
political meanings which often belie their origins. The artist's surreal
installation taking shape at TheSpace@inIVA combines such seemingly
incongruous elements as Jacquard fabric, giant hares and suspended thermos
flasks. The residency is being influenced by press coverage of Brazil's
500-year anniversary and alludes to the partial nature of such reportage.
Dark Habits (work in progress) also includes video works completed during
the residency. Using found super-8 film footage, these video works
re-interpret and manipulate memories, often with disorientating and eerie
effect.
Based in London, Padilha gained his MA in Fine Art from Chelsea College of
Art in 1997. His work has been included in Uncut, ICA Cinematheque, London,
1997 and Exchanges, Abel da Fonseca Warehouse, Lisbon, 1998.
