HMO/SUV/IPO: These short acronyms suggest certain lifestyles yet have
little real meaning for many. They suggest communication (acronyms are
used to make communication more efficient), yet they in fact discourage
discourse as one must be in the know about their meanings and
connotations. In this way the terms themselves create cultural divides and
boundaries. The full terms also contradict the reality of what they name:
what's truly manageable about an HMO (Health Management Organization);
what's truly utilitarian about a SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle); what's truly
public about an IPO (Initial Public Offering)?
The exhibiton at the Laemmle Grande Fourplex Theatre in Downtown Los Angeles, located on
Figueroa between Third and Fourth Streets includes artists: C. Ian White; Barbara Strasen; Andrea Katz-Evans; Nizan Shaked;
Manya Tan; Rebeca Puga; Michele O'Marah; Leonardo Bravo; Lucretia Knapp, and;
Jumpersled.
Side Street Projects, a nonprofit artist run organization, is committed to providing a place for social
interaction across cultural differences and ideas. To foster activities that cross media, definitions of cultural
production and practice, and include local artists in all aspects of it*s programming. They include thinkers
from all areas of the US and other countries, and across disciplines, to create regional development and
challenge existing models.
