"Barbara Kruger: Retrospective"
2000-07-13 until 2000-10-22
Whitney Museum of Art
New York, NY,
USA
The Whitney Museum surveys the bold work of Barbara Kruger in
the artist’s first major museum retrospective. Kruger’s instantly
identifiable images, among the most compelling of the past two
decades, explore the dynamics of power, identity, sexuality, and
representation, and have helped shape a generation of artists.
This
exhibition
features
over seventy
works by
Barbara
Kruger. The
once graphic
designer
takes her
graphic eye
to
monumental proportions with billboard sized works
which combine photography and text. These
in-your-face pieces express extreme emotions of
modern life. Sometimes boxed as a feminist, Kruger
maintains her work is pure social commentary.
Although this is a retrospective most of the works
themes provoke a reaction that feels current to the
viewer.
