"Design Afoot: Athletic Shoes 1995–2000"
2000-07-15 until 2000-10-17
San Francisco Museum of Modern Art
San Francisco, CA,
USA
This exhibition explores the recent athletic-shoe design explosion by showing a collection of the best running
shoes, athletic shoes and outdoor footwear. Design Afoot traces the evolution of athletic footwear in the last
five years, which have seen the line blur between fashion footwear and high-performance shoes.
The
exhibition displays these shoes in lines of shelves that will give the viewer a chance to compare the various
attributes of these objects. Several shoes will be shown in cross section, revealing the construction of these
pieces. Within the context of the Museum, we will judge these athletic shoes for the
design they have to offer even as they disappear in the blur of movement and
advertisement, states Aaron Betsky, SFMOMA curator of architecture, design, and
digital projects.
