"CALL FOR ENTRIES - American Landscape: New Media/New Century Award"
2000-08-21 until 2000-10-02
Smithsonian, American Art Museum and its Renwick Gallery
Washington, DC,
USA
The Smithsonian American Art Museum is accepting proposals for original web-based
projects that explore the subject of American landscape. Up to three projects will be
awarded grants of $4,000 each. In addition, those projects selected will debut on Helios,
SAAMs award-winning photography web site. Artists may enter as individuals or as
collaborative teams.
Landscape has been a touchstone of American art for over two hundred years. Early
painters found inspiration in natural wonders; Hudson River School artists transformed
landscape into a national icon; and exploration artists portrayed wilderness as a land of
opportunity. When photography was invented in 1839, this new medium revolutionized the
way we knew and understood the landscape. Today, new media is again transforming the
way artists look at the land, as technology encourages new collaborations, image
manipulations, and interactions with audiences. Acknowledging these changes, the
Smithsonian American Art Museum is commissioning new online projects through the New
Media/New Century Award.
Projects will be considered for their potential to bring new insight to landscape subjects as
online art works. Artists who have no web-based experience are encouraged to apply.
