This seminar takes a fresh look at some of the ground covered in the highly successful and extremely
well subscribed seminar of the same name run in 1998, and adds some new topics to the programme.
Through a series of lectures, case study presentations, workshops and museum and gallery visits;
this seminar will debate, discuss and dissect key issues in design and design management and examine
the vital contribution design can make to the success of museums, galleries and other cultural
institutions.
The main topics to be covered will include:
• How design can help today’s museums and galleries ‘compete’ with entertainment, shopping
and other leisure activities
• Managing exhibition design projects, including choosing and managing designers
• Managing building design projects, including choosing and managing architects and designers
• Using new technology, including multi-media and virtual reality, in exhibitions
• Designing retail, catering and other facilities
• The role and use of branding in raising public awareness, attracting visitors and generating funding
• Designing web sites to promote both museums and galleries and increase public awareness to
collections
The programme will involve visits to a range of museums and galleries in London, including a
number of the UK’s major Lottery-funded projects.
The seminar will be of interest primarily to chief executives, marketing directors, exhibitions
directors, heads of building and design, and other senior professional managers of museums,
galleries and other cultural institutions. Those involved on a voluntary or unpaid basis as trustees,
board members or other advisers as well as civil servants in cultural departments of national and
local government will also find the programme useful.
