"From Above: Photographs of Houston by Alex S. MacLean"
2000-09-07 until 2001-01-14
Menil Collection
Houston, TX,
USA
Twenty-five startling views of the city of Houston,
taken from the perspective of Alex MacLean’s
single-engine Cessna. From the Ship Channel to the
suburban prairie, MacLean’s photographs reveal
landscapes as abstract compositions, providing a vital
perspective on the relationship between natural and
manmade environments.
FROM ABOVE, curated by
Susan Davidson of The Menil Collection and architect
William F. Stern, of the Rice Design Alliance, brings an
urgent visibility to local and national environmental
issues. Alex MacLean’s photographs present a
remarkably beautiful portrait of Houston from a
vulnerable angle, notes Stern, a portrait that is at once
abstractly rich, like a modern painting, and at the same
time filled with critical comment.
