"An Active Life"
2000-09-09 until 2000-10-29
Contemporary Arts Center
Cincinnati, OH,
USA
Incorporating the ideals of a
funhouse into art that
awakens the senses, An
Active Life pushes aside
the notion that the museum
is a site for quiet
contemplation and instead
presents art that immerses
visitors in multi-sensory
experiences. Artists today
are finding inspiration in the
leisure activities usually
associated with amusement
parks, gyms and
entertainment complexes.
Visitors to An Active Life are
part of the creative act, rather
than just passive observers.
CAC guests will enjoy a
completely new experience
with each visit.
1 artists featured in An
Active Life include
Jonathan Borofsky,
Christoff Büchel, Ingrid
Eriksson, Nancy Evans,
Fred Fehlau, Carsten
Höller, Martin Kersels,
Jennifer Moon, Stephen
Shackelford, Pauline Stella
Sanchez and Hiro
Yamagata.
Highlights of the exhibition
include Yamagata's The
Elements, a laser
installation that puts the
participant in the center of swirls of colorful beams. The lasers bounce off
mirrors positioned throughout the installation to create the illusion of hundreds
of laser beams from only one. Visitors can make their own still life by arranging
Evans' delicately painted porcelain trinkets on patterned tables. California artist
Moon invites guests to climb on her work - she has created a climbing wall that
allows guests to rest in the living space at the top after their climb. And after
being properly suited up, CAC visitors can fly through the gallery in Höller's
Flying Machine.
