2000-10-21 until 2000-12-03
Contemporary Arts Museum Houston
Houston, TX,
USA
This exhibition explores the work of eight painters, photographers, installation artists, sculptors, and filmmakers who were
asked to create works of art inspired by the archives of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC). The
JDC has organized and executed rescue missions and major relief programs for the Jewish community over the past
century. The artists were asked to create a work of art inspired by their experience and response to the archives.
The artists
included are Magdalena Abakanowicz, Alan Berliner, Wendy Ewald, Leon Golub, Pepon Osorio, Gilles Peress, Fred
Wilson, and Terry Winters. To The Rescue: Eight Artists in an Archive was organized by Lookout for the American
Jewish Joint Distribution Committee and curated by Marvin Heiferman and Carole Kismaric. The exhibition is
accompanied by a 96-page illustrated catalogue.
