Indepth Arts News:
"Significant Others"
2000-10-21 until 2001-01-07
Scottish National Portrait Gallery
Edinburgh, ,
UK United Kingdom
This exhibition gathers together three
centuries of portraits by Scottish artists of the
men, women and children for whom they
reserved their strongest and most private
feelings: spouses and lovers, mothers and
fathers, children and friends. Images made by
an artist of family members and close
associates are often amongst the most
compelling human representations ever made.
The vast majority of portraits are
commissioned works, a professional exchange
of time and expertise for money, but for these
Significant Others the impetus is other:
affective and familial, the relationship itself
providing both the cause and the subject of the
exercise. The collections of the Portrait Gallery
are rich in such images, some of which are
well known with others rarely seen. Ranging
from the exceptionally intimate to the
outrageously glamorous, this exhibition
continues the Portrait Gallerys millennial
theme of celebrating the lives of ordinary
people.
