"Currents 83: Peter Doig"
2000-12-08 until 2001-02-18
Saint Louis Art Museum
St. Louis, MO,
USA
British-Canadian artist Peter Doig paints lush landscapes and nature scenes that reflect on places and events he has seen,
known, or imagined. Doig's paintings are a record of physical and psychological travels, presenting viewers with personal
memories intensified by his own observations. He paints from his own photographs, images found in newspapers,
postcards, and films, and photographs taken by friends. Doig tends to produce works in series, creating multiple images of
a scene or site on canvas and on paper. Despite his personalization of places and formal elements, many of the settings in
Doig's paintings are recognizable: the stadium in Buffalo, New York; a tunnel by the side of the highway in Toronto; the
closing scene from the film Friday the 13th.
Currents 83: Peter Doig includes paintings and drawings from the1990s. It is the first solo museum exhibition of the
artist's work in North America and was organized by the Berkeley Art Museum. Its presentation at the Saint Louis Art
Museum is organized by Rochelle Steiner, assistant curator of contemporary art. Currents 83: Peter Doig is part of a
series of exhibitions featuring the work of contemporary artists.
