"Rick Beck: Sculpture"
2001-01-13 until 2001-03-11
Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts

Ten years after completing his Master of Fine Arts degree, Rick Beck is coming
into his own as a master of the glass media. Recent work focuses on objects
found in a carpenter shop or a mechanic's garage—nuts, bolts, and screws.
Rather than using these items to hold his objects together, Beck takes these
simple metal fasteners, enlarges the forms, and casts them in glass.
He uses
a fragile material to present objects that would normally be able to endure a
great deal of stress and weight. Whether he presents something small
enough to fit on a table or large enough stand on its own, Beck’s work offers
a unique appeal because of the delicate nature of the medium. Well versed in
the craft tradition, he has taught in some of the finest glass programs in the
country. These include the Penland School of Crafts, Penland, N.C.; Pilchuck
Glass School, Stanwood, WA; and the Appalachian Center for Crafts,
Smithville, TN.
