"Superflat"
2001-01-14 until 2001-05-06
Museum of Contemporary Art, LA
Los Angeles, CA,
USA
The MOCA Gallery at the Pacific Design Center presents Superflat. The exhibition surveys a tendency in Japanese art,
animation, and graphic design towards
two-dimensionality. An overall patterning of colors
and shapes is often the result of such flattening,
and the subsequent weightlessness in the works
reflects the speed and agility with which Japanese
popular culture changes to embrace new
sensibilities.
Organized by artist Takashi
Murakami, the exhibition includes painting,
photography, works on paper, video, computer
animation, graphic design, cartoons, and sculpture
by some of the most exciting artists working in
Japan. The MOCA presentation of Superflat,
coordinated by research assistant Michael Darling,
will be the first outside of Japan.
In-kind support has been provided by Canon.
