"BACK ON EARTH: A Mural for Marz Cummings"
2001-01-19 until 2001-02-18
Wellington City Gallery
Wellington, ,
NZ
A Mural for Marz Cummings is a tribute to community muralist
Marz Cummings by fellow artists and friends left back on earth. Cummings
died, aged 34, in a motorbike accident in October 1999. His work can be seen in
Te Aro Park (Pigeon Park), the Wellington Ports, and the Aro Community Centre.
The exhibition celebrates his contribution to the city’s urban environment, and
remembers his generosity as an artist and friend. One of the participating artists
is local cartoonist Brent Harpur: Over the seven years I knew Marz, I was
humbled by his generosity, rare intuition and gentleness. In 1999 Marz, some
Porirua schoolchildren and I worked on a mural together. I saw his true potential
as a role model, sharing his skills and knowledge patiently and without prejudice
or ego.
The other artists involved are Ellen Coup, Craig Dawick, Aaron Frater, Rochelle
Hopping, Bruce McNaught, Brian Parata and Bodhi Vincent. Some have never
worked on a mural collaboratively before.
The mural will be painted on removable panels so it can be installed elsewhere in
Wellington after the exhibition.
Back on Earth is presented within the programme 360 – a full perspective on
Wellington Art, which is generously sponsored by Designworks.
