"Jaune Quick-to-See Smith: Recent Paintings"
2001-01-21 until 2001-05-20
Neuberger Museum of Art
Purchase, NY,
USA
Since the late 1970s, the landscape and animal motifs in Jaune Quick-To-See
Smith's paintings have evolved from her own pictographic language of forms. The
work appears to evoke Smith's Native American artistic heritage that includes
ancient paintings and drawings displaying abbreviated imagery.
She often uses her
painterly technique in combination with collaged materials that heighten her
appealingly tactile surfaces. Her widely exhibited and reviewed work is in the
permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the National Museum of
Women in the Arts, and the National Museum of American Art. Smith's
contribution to the figurative strain in contemporary art is distinctive. Funded, in
part, by the Westchester Arts Council.
