"Give and Take: Hans Haake, An Artist Selects Objects From the V and A Collections"
2001-01-31 until 2001-04-01
Victoria and Albert Museum
London, ,

Give & Take is an innovative partnership between the Serpentine, the acclaimed public gallery for
modern and contemporary art, and the Victoria and Albert Museum, one of the world's greatest fine
and decorative arts museums. Presented concurrently at both institutions, this exhibition provides a
unique opportunity to experience unexpected connections between contemporary art and art of the
past. At the Serpentine Gallery, the renowned German conceptual artist, Hans Haacke, will create a
work which will fill the entire Gallery using objects selected solely from the V&A's collections. At the
V&A, an international group of contemporary artists will present their work in galleries throughout the
museum. This will be the first time many of these works will be seen in the UK.
Offered unparalleled access to its collections during the past year, Hans Haacke has been studying
objects and artefacts from the V&A, as well as the history of the museum, with the intention of
re-presenting a selection of these objects at the Serpentine Gallery. As the 'social secretary' who
puts together a guest list and a seating order it is my job to see that the arrangement of unexpected
encounters bears fruit. Hans Haacke, 2000.
