"Gerome and Goupil: Art and Enterprise"
2001-02-06 until 2001-05-05
Dahesh Museum of Art

USA United States of America
This international loan exhibition, organized with the Musée
Goupil, Bordeaux, and the Frick Art and Historical Center,
Pittsburg, will feature over 20 paintings by one of Frances
greatest academic masters, Jean-Leon Gerome, and the
remarkable and diverse prints made after them by his dealer
and printmaker, Goupil et Cie.
The widespread dissemination
of Goupils prints made Gérôme into a national celebrity,
blurring-- long before Andy Warhol-- the lines between high
art and popular culture. Accompanied by a fully illustrated
catalogue with essays by leading French and American
scholars in the field, including Dahesh Museum of Art curator
Stephen Edidin, this landmark exhibition will offer insights
into the birth of the modern business of art.
