"Islands in the Sun: Prints by indigenous artists of the Oceanic region"
2001-02-17 until 2001-05-27
National Gallery of Australia
Canberra, AC,

The indigenous peoples of the Oceanic
region share the same recent history.
Colonised by Europeans, they have all
had to struggle to maintain their individual
cultural identities. In each of these
societies the arts flourish and are
characterised by a renewed interest in
traditional images, designs and
narratives.
Islands in the Sun presents
contemporary woodcuts, screenprints
and lithographs by the indigenous
peoples of mainland Australia, Torres
Strait, Bathurst Island, Niugini, Aotearoa
and Samoa.
