David Heald worked in the CMA's photography studio from 1974 to 1981, before moving to New York, where he is
chief photographer of the Guggenheim Museum. Long interested in architecture and the natural landscape, Heald
made seven trips to France between 1985 and 1995 to photograph early Cistercian Abbeys.
In his luminous
black-and-white photographs, he explores the architecture of these medieval buildings renowned for their design
and construction.
