Johan Thurfjell's family has many storytellers, something he has made use
of in earlier works. One example is the work made for Index Edition 1998: a
CD with his father, Bengt Thurfjell, retelling the film 'Jaws'.
In his new work, Johan Thurfjell is inspired by eight stories about dreams.
He describes his own work as follows:
There is a place outside Norrtälje that really means a lot to me. The
little, red house there was built by my grandfather's grandfather, who
dragged the logs over the ice at the turn of the last century. Since then,
it's been a wonderful summer getaway for four generations of my relatives.
I've spent time there every year since I was born. Often when I am
dreaming, everything is staged around this place, regardless of what the
dream is about.
In the work, Nine Dreams and the Places Dreamt About, I've
constructed a model of this place from memory, as well as what I remember
from the dreams that were staged there. The exact location where each dream
was played out is marked on the model. I want to give a viewer the chance
of perceiving these dreams and getting some kind of overview about them.
I've chosen to make a realistic landscape model because it awakens my
fantasy about being able to fly, a fantasy I think I share with a lot of
people.
