We all experience forms of multiple identification, and our
identity is never exclusively male or female, black or
white. (Candice Breitz) In an extensive show, the O.K presents the penetrating
works of the young South African artist: 8 video
installations and photo series exploring the themes of pop
culture, sexuality, feminism, racism and ethnicity: The Babel
Series, Four Duets, Karaoke, Soliloquy Trilogy, Group
Portraits, Rorschach Series, Ghost Series, Rainbow Series
An uproar was the response to a series by the artist, born
1972 in Johannesburg, of collaged and subsequently
photographed pictures from the Rainbow Series (1996).
In this, Breitz combined photos of body parts of white
women from porno magazines with views of black African
women on traditional postcards.
Candice Breitz will live and work at O.K as artist in
residence for the duration of the exhibition, and the results
will be shown on June 26 as part of the presentation NEW
CUTS.
