Port Elizabeth artist, Lushan Mansell, to exhibit at the BAT Centres Menzi
Mcunu Gallery. FROM NOW, an exhibition of paintings and glass-work by Port Elizabeth
artist, Lushan Mansell, opens at the BAT Centres Menzi Mcunu Gallery on
Friday 11 May. Mansells first solo exhibition, From Nows theme is Jazzart expression
and interpretation.
A Port Elizabeth Technikon graduate, Mansells says: For me, the creation
of art has become an act of surrender and trust: of my muses, who decide
what has to be expressed, and of my skill that has been developed over the
period of my life.
What has transpired is a collection of images on paper that express in
line, tone and composition, the inner landscapes, she continues.
While they are sourced from my own experiences, the images are open enough
for the viewer to step into them and allow what is given to give expression
to their experiences.
I grow in confidence and skill and so add colour and texture to my palette
in a gesture of reciprocation to the Universe that has given them to us,
she concludes.
The exhibition closes on Sunday 3 June.
While in Durban, Mansell will run a two-day drawing workshop.
The workshop, which takes place at the BAT Centre on Saturday 19 and Sunday
20 May from 09h00 to 16h00, aims to help participants realise and develop
their uninhibited, creative sides and to expose participants to the notion
that drawing is more than a process of producing a carbon copy of the
outside world -- that it is also a way of expressing the abstract.
Mansell will use a combination of yoga, and visualisation and breathing
exercises used by actors to help focus the minds eye inward, and relax the
body and mind. Using visual material, she will discuss the various
properties of successful drawing and how they have been utilised in
different ways by different artists. She will demonstrate various
mark-making and layering techniques and discuss the viability of different
mediums and formats.
The workshop is free, but space is limited to 12. To book, please call
Njabulo Hlongwane at the BAT Centre on +27 (031) 332 0451.
