"Fighting Words: Proverbs in Asafo Flags of Ghana"
2001-05-25 until 2001-08-12
Textile Museum
Washington, DC,
USA
Exploring the oral traditions of the Fante culture,
Fighting Words will feature asafo flags recently given
to The Textile Museum, as well as other examples from
private and public holdings.
Distinguished by lively
pictoral renderings of local proverbs, asafo flags are one
way the Fante people of coastal Ghana manifest their rich
oral traditions. Originally born to the service of war, the
flags, which are constructed in beguiling, simple appliqué
forms, incorporate the wisdom of proverbs and oral
history.
