Carnegie Museum of Art
Pittsburgh, PA,

In 1864, Reverend Elias Magoon sold his art collection to Vassar College for the purpose of
establishing an art gallery there. The heart of this collection was a large number of drawings
and prints acquired from the London estate of John Britton, an influential author and publisher
of antiquarian and topographic books on British architecture and scenery. Landscapes of
Retrospection brings together for the first time more than one hundred of the finest architectural
views, landscape watercolors, and other works on paper from the Magoon Collection. The
exhibition is comprised largely of depictions of medieval English ruins and antiquities and
includes work by some of the most accomplished artists and architectural draftsmen in
eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Britain, including J.M. W. Turner, Augustus Charles Pugin,
Sir John Soane, and Joseph Gandy. The exhibition has been organized by The Frances Lehman
Loeb Art Center, Vassar College, Poughkeepsie, New York.
