"The Great Wide Open: Panoramic Photographs of the American West"
2001-06-14 until 2001-09-09
Huntington Library, Art Collections, & Botanical Gardens
San Marino, CA,
USA
The dynamic relationship between panoramic imagery and understandings of the American West will be explored in this exhibition, which
focuses on the way panoramic photographs have documented and mythologized the trans-Mississippi West from the 1840s to the present. The
show features approximately 60 historic and contemporary images of the region in a provocative installation designed to elicit new ideas and
visual connections.
Well-known early photographers such as Carleton E. Watkins, William H. Jackson, and Eadweard Muybridge are
represented, along with contemporary photographers including Karen Halverson, Mark Klett, Gus Foster, Robert Dawson, Stuart Klipper,
Catherine Opie, Lois Conner, and Skeet McAuley. Albums created by amateur photography enthusiasts and the archives of commercial
photographers also yielded a wealth of historic images for the show. A full-color catalog will accompany the exhibition. The Great Wide
Open: Panoramic Photographs of the American West is made possible by a generous grant from the Ralph M. Parsons Foundation. The
exhibition catalog has been funded by the Fletcher Jones Foundation. Boone Gallery
