Indepth Arts News:
"Darren Almond"
2001-06-16 until 2001-08-12
De Appel
Amsterdam, ,
NL
From 16 June through 12 August 2001, De Appel will devote a solo
presentation to Darren Almond, a young artist who works with video,
sculpture and real-time works. Almond's investigation of time, space and
the body seems to be based on a single underlying theme: the
instrumentalized human subject. Apart from new work, Darren Almond will
present 'Oswiecim' (1997): a sculpture consisting of replicas of the bus
stops near the Auschwitz concentration camp, which bear witness to waiting,
being transported, working, getting injured, extermination and
commemoration. Traction' (1998/1999) is a video triptych about his parents
in which the mother is the silent but emotional witness of the injuries
sustained by the father, whose work as a building demolisher is attested by
the scars on his body.
