Described as a 'sensitive but emotive experience of fertility and conception observed in multi-layered images', Blend is an exhibition of photographic images by Durban artist, Michelle Barrell. Barrell, who specialises in black and white photography with an emphasis on toning and colouring, recently obtained a B. Tech. majoring in photography and art theory from the Technikon Natal.
She has participated in several exhibitions, notably her installation 'Bed of Roses' at the NSA Gallery. Barrell's statement reads: Within the realm of the maternal are a multitude of pre-conceived expectations that are often involuntarily placed upon women. Before birth, the baby girl will most often already carry the seed for the next generation and, even at birth, she will already have her 'social responsibility' defined without her consent. Blend is an exploration of conception and the reproductive body, whilst examining who has ownership of the body -- the mother, the unborn child, the seed, or do they all co-habit in a mutually 'borrowed' space.
