"Bertien van Manen: Intimate Documentary Photographs"
2001-08-11 until 2001-10-13
Museum of Contemporary Photography
Chicago, IL,
USA
Bertien van Manen (The Netherlands, born 1942) creates intimate
documentary photographs of people in cultures other than her own. Her
style is molded by great lengths of time dedicated to living amongst her
subjects. By learning local languages and devoting time to personal
relationships, Van Manen is able to gain access to places that are often
inaccessible to a stranger with a camera, such as the homes of ordinary
people.
On view at the museum will be A Hundred Summers, A Hundred
Winters, pictures made in the former Soviet Union over a four-year
period beginning in 1990; East Wind, West Wind, photographs made
since 1998 in China; and Men, portraits of four men (father, husband,
lover, and son) central to the artists life. IMAGE: Bertien van Manen
