"Frances Fussell: Resent Paintings"
2001-08-16 until 2001-09-02
Michael Commerford Gallery
Sydney, ,
AU Australia
Frances Fussell opens an exhibition of bold, vibrant floral imagery at the Michael Commerford Gallery. The artist zooms in on the subject matter, pushing realism near to abstraction with a forced frame of reference. The colors and light source add to the drama in these paintings. In some pieces the artist organizes the very organic imagery into a grid, creating a more grphic feeling.
The artist was born in Holland and came to Australia with her parents. Fussell was an art teacher with the
Education Department after completing a full time art course and subsequently worked as a
commercial artist-illustrator before travelling overseas.
She became interested in weaving and had a number of solo exhibitions of hand woven rugs and
wall hangings before resuming painting. Fussell has won many regional awards and exhibits in
prestigious galleries in Sydney and Newcastle. Her work is represented both nationally and
internationally.
