Oakland Museum of California, at Latham Square
Oakland, CA,
USA
In August the Professional Services (P.S.) department of the Oakland Museum of
California opens an exhibit by a local artist in office buildings in downtown
Oakland. Essence of Place by artist Mitchell Johnson runs from Aug. 3 to
Oct. 26, 2001 in the lobby of the Latham Square Building, 1611 Telegraph Ave.
Essence of Place, at the Latham Square Building, is an exhibit of seven large-
scale paintings by Menlo Park-based artist Mitchell Johnson. The exhibit includes
landscapes and figurative work painted on site in Italy, France, New Mexico and
Northern California. Johnsons paintings are representational, with an affinity for
the Bay Area figurative tradition, and emphasize color as a vehicle to build
pictorial space.
P.S. is a new project of the Oakland Museum of California in which the museum
collaborates with client organizations to bring art into the community. In addition
to the downtown sites, P.S. develops exhibits for the Oakland International
Airport.
The exhibit is sponsored by CAC Real Estate Management Company, Inc. in
association with the Oakland Museum of California Professional Services division .
In addition, Essence of Place is cosponsored by Latham Square Associates and
Alex Mitchell: New Works is cosponsored by Songi Partnership.
