The exhibition is conceived by Paolo De Grandis and organised by Arte Communications in co-operation with Venice City Council and under the highest auspices of the President of the Republic of Italy, The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Italian Ministry of Cultural and Environmental Goods. The main curator of the show is the famous art critic Prof. Pierre Restany. OPEN2001 will be held simultaneously with the 58th Venice Cinema Festival and the 49th International Art Biennial of Venice and significant installations and sculptures proposing one artist from each participating country will be exhibited until October.
At its preparation for the 4th edition, OPEN is having an outstanding success, due to previous editions with 65 participating artists from 41 countries. This year the subject will not only be about the interaction between art and the language of cinema, but the Globalisation of the Culture which is the theme of the event. Since the first edition in 1998, OPEN has been one of the first exhibitions that have started a dialogue with the entire world, expanding the boundaries of the art system beyond Europe and the USA. Such event has made the different cultures of our planet get closer, in the consciousness that stronger countries will be competing with emerging ones. From this comparison strong renewing energies can be born, together with visions of the world that were never explored before. All these events bring a considerable contribute to the art system, because the new worlds- rich in subjects about the memory of their own cultures- can bring a number of new elements to the creative languages of the already confirmed nations.
The title of the exhibition, OPEN, has exactly this aim: open the boundaries of art and make the dialogue and the interaction between far away countries more dynamic. At this edition will be present Mimmo Rotella for Italy, Bernar Venet for France and, directly from the Foundation Keith Haring, for USA, an artwork of the famous artist dead prematurely. Every year one artwork will be donated to the permanent collection of Venice-Lido.
