"Plattform1_Documenta11: Democracy Unrealized - Democracy as an Uncompleted Process"
2001-10-09 until 2001-10-30

The biennialisation of the world proceeds apace. Hardly a month passes without a new international exhibition coming into being as a result of the globalisation of art and culture. The Documenta, itself an originator of this phenomenon, is calling its own praxis into question, and with Documenta 11 is situating itself beyond the conventional cultural or diverting offerings of the mega-event.
By means of activities
which follow on from one another, discursive sites are created in which questions are raised that are
important today for an understanding of the production, distribution and reception of artistic work: how
can international art exhibitions - adapting themselves critically to a global paradigm - become
meaningful venues for the meeting of art, culture and politics, without restricting the aesthetic issues
important to the language and reception of contemporary artNULL In what ways do artists, intellectuals and
activists intervene within the critical logistics of art, culture and politicsNULL How are these logistics to be
produced and receivedNULL
To investigate these questions, Okwui Enwezor, curator of Documenta 11, together with an international
team of co-curators and co-operative partners, has realised a series of five platforms at each of the
participating venues. The first four deal in different places - Vienna, Berlin, New Delhi, St. Lucia and
Lagos - with specific thematic complexes that are directly and indirectly involved in the genesis of the
fifth platform, the exhibition in Kassel. Platform 1, in the House of World Cultures, bears the title
Democracy Unrealized.
