"Hmmm...David Shrigley's Selection from the Permanent
Collection"
2001-11-24 until 2002-02-24
Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art
Edinburgh, ,
UK United Kingdom
Selected by David Shrigley, Hmmm... is the second in a series of
small displays chosen from the Gallery's permanent collection by
invited artists. Born in Macclesfield in 1968, Shrigley studied at
Glasgow School of Art, and now lives and works in the city.
His sculptures, photographs and books are darkly humorous and often
absurd, and his drawings were recently a weekly feature in the
Independent on Sunday. Given the complete freedom of the Gallery's
stores and print room, Shrigley has put together a striking
combination of works, from Marcel Duchamp's Wedge of Chastity,
made in bronze and dental plastic, to an early portrait by the Scottish
Colourist, S. J. Peploe. The display will include both works that are
rarely seen, and paintings by more familiar artists, including René
Magritte and John Bellany. A display of Shrigley's own work in the
Gallery's collection will accompany Hmmm...
