Indepth Arts News:
"Re:mote - Relationship between Land and Place"
2001-11-30 until 2002-01-19
Photographers' Gallery
London, ,
UK
The term Re:mote refers to a location that is far away and
distant; a distance of time; a relationship to far off-kin and a term
used to refer to operating systems controlled remotely. This
show considers the complex relationship between land and
place investigating its mediation through technology.
Many of
the artists follow the romantic tendency to return to nature and
replicate wild rural idylls; others reveal the artifice of landscape.
The impetus for some are the politics of land - using technology
to highlight issues about polluted dumping grounds and nuclear
wastelands. Threaded through is the experience of
long-distance forms of communication which can simultaneously
collapse barriers of space, location and time whilst creating a
sense of alienation and isolation.
As part of this exhibition, Re: mote,The Photographers' Gallery
is developing a project with artist, Erwin Wurm and The Media
Centre, Huddersfield, for which participants are required. If you
have a mobile phone and would like to subscribe to a free text
messaging list to develop an artwork for the exhibition please
