Transit Space is pleased to present new work by British artist
Simon Faithfull. Faithfull’s recent work has had an infatuation with the digital
pixel. Used as a totem of everything that technology is not
supposed to be, the pixels laid down in these Palm Pilot
drawings create images on the point of disappearing. Rather
than capturing reality in high resolution, the crude, jagged lines
are formed by a series of ‘on/off’ propositions that speak more
of loss, and the inability of the human mind to hold a memory.
For his installation at Transit Space, Faithfull will be creating
large-scale bit-maps – literally a map of bits – which in this case
will form images of the ends of his dog. Here, the role of pixels
will be taken by cigarette papers – liquorice for black, regular for
white. Licked and stuck to the walls in grids, the coded pattern
finally revealing delicate outlines – precarious, transient images
which like Borges’ ‘Map in The Sand’ will move with every
passing breeze.
Faithfull’s mapping is a personal investigation, which
stimulates us to see the world around us from an idiosyncratic
and subjective standpoint. The intimate ‘maps’ in recent work
are composed of interaction, memories and personal
references, which form alternative mental landscapes rather
than strict topological representations. By illuminating scraps
from a deluge of information too complex and numerous to be
conventionally mapped, Faithfull necessarily points us to the
gaps or parts which are left blank – like memories of the things
we choose to forget.
Simon Faithfull currently has a solo exhibition
Psychotopography’ at Artsway, Hampshire, and has recently
completed a site-specific installation ‘Flow’ in Regents Canal,
London. Past exhibitions include ‘Temporary Accommodation’,
Whitechapel Gallery; ‘Drawing Quirks’, Parkers Box in New York,
‘Hertford Union’, Chisenhale Gallery in London, and ‘Y’,
Veemvloer Gallery in Amsterdam. Faithfull is also the co-founder
of e-2, a web-based project funded by the Arts Council to
commission new art works for the internet.
