"Xu Zhongmin: City of Dreams"
2002-07-12 until 2002-08-10
Gallery ART U
Osaka, ,
JP Japan
Art U is pleased to present the first solo exhibition in Japan of the
work of China-born London artist Xu Zhongmin. Agglomerative scenery has always been the central concern of Xu's work
since his early career; an image of a traditional high-floor house appeared in
his work during student days at Sichuan Fine Arts Academy. He didn't lose time starting to
grow and form villages, towns and cities as he moved to Beijing, and
then to London.
In the late 1990s when Xu created a large-scale woodcarving
relief from a printing block, this scenery had attained a
dreamlike megalopolis aspect with its boundlessly intricate structures.
Innumerable human figures, flickering as if they were illuminated by a
revolving lantern and scattered over the wide-ranging panoramic composition
which evokes certain traditional Chinese-style landscapes, all this dazzling
cityscape may possibly overlap with today's China under its dynamic
development.
You are cordially invited to experience the world of Xu Zhongmin, who
created most of the works for this exhibition.
