Digital artist Mary Flanagan is also a multimedia producer and teacher, who is currently an Assistant Professor of Digital Arts at the State University of New York at Buffalo, where she teaches about gender and technology, cyberculture, interactive media, and sound design.
She is primarily interested in exploring issues of gender, identity, memory and culture in virtual spaces, creating work which explores narrative and spatiality, communication and the body, aged and mortal, situated by gender, identity, language and image.
[phage], her project for The Physics Room, is a (consensual) virus developed by Flanagan, which explores a workstations architecture, and creates a poetics of the computer as an autonomous object, with host data as material for creative fodder.
[phage] plays on the coded word of virus, constructed as an inherently negative entity, offering instead a feminist map of the machine through its non-hierarchical organization, and its divorce of creative (and reproductive) control from the user to the machine.
