Goldsmith Carine Terreblanche, in the long gallery, a one-time Jewellery Design lecturer at Stellenbosch University, now operates her own studio in Cape Town. She offers an innovative range of designer jewellery that is an exciting alternative to mass-produced items.
Her jewellery is playful, experimental, celebratory and, often, quite daring, but still highly wearable, she says. It‚s meant to adorn the body, adorn its wearer. It makes a statement, but it is still functional. Her pieces incite conversation when juxtaposed with more traditional jewellery created as everyday status symbols demonstrating wealth and excess.
Terreblanche works full-time from her studio, which she opened in August 2001 and where she executes commissions for clients. After taking part in many group shows over the years, CARINE will hold her first solo exhibition at the AVA in July 2002.
Carine holds a BAFA (1991) and a BAFA Honours (Cum Laude) (1993), as well as an MA (1998) in Jewellery Design from Stellenbosch University, where she lectured for six and half years (from 1995 to 2001), while working concurrently as a designer. She also spent one year studying at the renowned Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam in 1994. During her extensive studies she received numerous awards, scholarships and bursaries, from 1992 until 1996.
