The Northern Illinois University Art Gallery in Chicago is pleased to announce Jane Calvin: A Decade of Work, Photographs 1992-2002, an exhibition featuring the photographic work of Chicago artist Jane Calvin. The exhibition will run September 13 through October 12, 2002. This exhibition is presented in conjunction with Discontinuum: Photographs by Jane Calvin, showing August 13 through November 10, 2002 at the Tweed Museum of Art, University of Minnesota, Duluth.
Each exhibition will present forty photographs created over the last decade that montage projected imagery and found objects into room-sized assemblages, which the artist then photographs in vivid color. Text plays an important role in Calvin’s work, as she expresses an interest in the relationships between visual and verbal communication. She incorporates imagery and text fragments from advertising, storybooks, movie posters, romance and mystery novels, hoping to explore varied circumstances and emotions that the artist believes reflect the complexity of contemporary life. Calvin suggests, “I make photographs, I don’t take them. I am a maker of meaning, not an observer of it.” The Tweed publication Discontinuum will be available in the Chicago Gallery.
Jane Calvin has exhibited widely throughout the United States, with recent solo exhibitions at venues including the Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts, Wilmington, Delaware, The Edwin A. Ulrich Museum of Art, Wichita, Kansas, and The Fort Wayne Museum of Art, Fort Wayne, Indiana. Her work is featured in prominent collections, including The Polaroid International Collection, Cologne, Germany, The Art Institute of Chicago, The Detroit Institute of Arts and The Minneapolis Institute of Arts. Calvin was awarded the 1999 and 2001 Illinois Arts Council Visual Artists Fellowship Grant, and the 1995 National Endowment for the Arts Regional Visual Artist Fellowship Award, among many others.
