Open Studio is pleased to present now and then, a group show featuring work by Briar Craig, Elizabeth Forrest, Leah Oates, Elena Roginsky, Rochelle Rubinstein, March 6 – 29, 2003. Presented are time-based narratives referencing history, memory, fragmentation, motion and surveillance that explore on an intuitive level how we experience time on a daily basis.
Briar Craig is a Kelowna-based artist with an MVA in printmaking from the University of Alberta, and BFA from Queen’s University. He has exhibited across Canada as well as in Poland, Japan, and Ireland. The recipient of numerous grants, his work is in several collections, including: The Japan Print Association, Queen’s University, Royal Bank of Canada, Wawanesa Insurance Company. Briar Craig is an Associate Professor at Okanagan University College.
Elizabeth Forrest is a Toronto-based artist and arts educator, and a graduate of the Ontario College of Art and Design. Forrest spent eleven years living in Japan and continues to exhibit her work there as well as across Canada and in Holland. Her work is in numerous public collections including: the Italian Cultural Institute, Tokyo; Bank of Montreal; University of Illinois Print Collection. She has been the recipient of several Canada Council and Ontario Arts Council grants.
Leah Oates is a Brooklyn-based artist with an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and BFA from Rhode Island School of Design. She has exhibited extensively throughout the United States in addition to Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, Korea, Japan, Lithuania, Austria and Italy. Her photography, works on paper and artist’s books are represented in numerous collections including: Rochester Institute of Technology, Museum of Modern Art, and the National Museum of Women in the Arts. Elena Roginsky is a Toronto-based artist with an MA in Fine Arts from the Institute for Textile Technology in Moscow. She has participated in group and solo exhibitions in Moscow and Jerusalem. Recent shows in Toronto include Painted City Gallery and Praxis Gallery.
Rochelle Rubinstein is a Toronto-based artist with a BA from Stern College, NYC. She has exhibited at galleries across Toronto, as well as in Dublin, New York City, Boston, Michigan, and California. In 2000, she coordinated Art Against War, an international banner project, with the Women’s Art Resource Centre. Her work is included in the collections of: Museum of Modern Art, National Library of Canada, University of Santa Cruz, Atlanta College of Art, among others.
