The South African National Gallery is to host an exhibition of work by Brett Murray, Standard Bank Young Artist for 2002, from 5-30 April. Entitled White Like Me, the exhibition, which ran at the Grahamstown Festival last year, comprises large cartoon-like images in two colours as well as perspex collage. The exhibition is said to be a thought-provoking look at South African Society, specifically the post-apartheid South Africa of affirmative action, transformation and employment equity. Murray uses his art to examine the identity of white people in the new South Africa.
Emma Bedford, Head Curator for Iziko Art Collections says: With sculptural cartoons accompanied by satirical text, white is simultaneously the normative paradigm as well as volatile ethnic category.
This award-winning artist, variously described as controversial, complex, witty and serious, has yet another feather in his cap. He is one of two artists selected to create a giant relief sculpture for permanent display at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.
