On April 17, 2003, the Alexandria Black History Resource
Center will open the exciting new exhibition from the Smithsonian’s
National Portrait Gallery (NPG), “Posing with Dignity: Photographing the
Heroes of Our Community,” with a reception from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. The
exhibition will be on view until July 1, 2003, and admission is free. The
exhibition is composed of nineteen student photographic images that were
part of a special summer enrichment program designed for the DC Public
School System.
Three significant photographers in the National Portrait Gallery’s
permanent collection served as the inspiration for this exciting project:
James VanDerZee, Gordon Parks, and Addison Scurlock. The work of these
photographers stimulated students as they went on to document their lives,
communities, and heroes through photographic portraiture.
NPG provides this exhibition as a model for educators around the Washington
metropolitan area to use to further youth self-awareness, instill a sense
of community connectivity, and enhance appreciation of photographic
portraiture.
In conjunction with the exhibition, NPG Outreach Program Manager Tia Powell
Harris and Education Associate Samantha Matalone will present two educator
workshops. These will assist teachers in encouraging students to learn
about their communities and the heroes that reside in them by exploring the
students’ own creative writing and photographic talents. Workshop materials
will be provided.
