Laurence Miller Gallery is pleased to present OASES, a group show of
photographs that explore the landscape as a place for sanctuary, shelter,
protection, and contemplation, as well as a place of risk, threat, menace
and jeopardy. The ten artists exhibiting are Larry Burrows, Lois Conner, Stephane
Couturier, Yannick Demmerle, Lennart Durehead, William Eggleston, Yasuhiro
Ishimoto, Uta Kogelsberger, Mark Mann and Toshio Shibata.
The landscape has always provided artists with an infinite range of choices
for personal expression, whether it be the depiction of a holy place or the
carnage of a battlefield. The ten artists selected for OASES each bring a
different interpretation to the landscape. Larry Burrows, shooting from
U.S. Marine helicopter, reveals a group of helpless Vietcong prisoners being
marched across gorgeous water-filled paddies; Yannick Demmerle invites the
viewer to feel lost within the rich details of an endless autumn forest;
William Eggleston records a detail of golden sand scarred by a tire track,
and punctuated by weeds; Mark Mann creates an urban oasis in which a family
seeks safety in the median of grass between lanes of a highway; and Uta
Kogelsberger reveals a nighttime scene in which a barren house sits aglow
within the darkness of a subterranean land.
