"Schoonover Surprise"
2003-07-30 until 2003-09-07
Biggs Museum of American Art

USA United States of America
Two grimacing clerks, feather quills in hand, peer suspiciously at a youngster
seated in front of a new-fangled machine called a typewriter. A medieval court-
jester starts with astonishment and fear as a suit of armor comes to life. A
middle-aged man dances a lively jig in a tavern. These are only a few of the
paintings in Schoonover Surprise!, an exhibit featuring images with elements of
humor and surprise in Frank E. Schoonover's magazine illustrations from the
first decades of the twentieth-century.
This selection is comprised of
paintings and drawings from the Schoonover Fund and private collectors. This
show adds a playful dimension to the Biggs Museum's diverse collection of the
local Delawarean's work. Come enjoy this unique exhibit from Wednesday, July
30 through Sunday, September 7.
Programs and exhibitions at the Biggs Museum of American Art are made possible,
in part, by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Delaware
Division of the Arts, a state agency committed to promoting and supporting the
arts in Delaware. The Delaware Division of the Arts provides technical and
financial assistance to artists and arts programs and serves as a clearinghouse
for information on the arts.
