What happens when artists are asked to play? Gallery director, curator, artist and humorist Mark Nielsen, aka Uncle Art, invited photographer Cynthia Greig, sculptor Krista Hoefle, painter Jason Lahr, media artist Leslie Raymond, et al to interpret the theme of the playground for this summer’s exhibition. Respectively, their work plays with interactive participation, perceptual changes in context and scale, and issues of feminine and masculine identity using everything from comics, toys and tv to makeup, cotton balls, and hair ribbons as their material. The exhibition invites gallery visitors to consider the grounding potential of humor and the relief of just letting go.
Established in 1995 and named in honor of the founder of The National Museum of African Art and advisory board member of the School of Art & Design, the Warren M Robbins Gallery, part of the Warren Robbins Graduate Center at the University of Michigan, offers innovative and experimental exhibition programs that present work by both Art & Design MFA candidates as well as national and international artists and designers.
