The Ohio Art League is pleased to announce its AUGUST 2003 Member Curated Exhibition, Red Hot: The works of Duane McDiarmid, Melissa Day, and Ellen Smith, curated by Ellen Smith. The Ohio Art League is a nonprofit membership-based organization, dedicated to the presentation and support of Ohio artists. The gallery is located at 954 N. High Street . The unifying factor is the color red, as it alludes to various aspects of sexuality in our culture. Red Hot is a menage-a-trois between two painters and a sculptor. Each artist is engaged in a serious individual investigation of form and content.
Melissa Day works from materials and fabrics ordinarily assigned to the female gender, such as nail polish and panty hose, using color as a sexual lure and signifier. Duane McDiarmid's work is a literal web of sensuous crimson velvet and silk, suspended from the ceiling, alluding to women's garments and the male gaze. In her paintings, Ellen Smith employs a candy coating of red, implying a humorous dialogue between spiritual and physical desire. As an ensemble, this Athens, Ohio threesome produces a carnival of color, texture, material and space guaranteed to delight and seduce the viewer. Opening reception Saturday, August 2, 6 - 9 pm About the MCE Program: The Ohio Art League invites it’s 800+ artists to submit a short written proposal to the Exhibition Committee. Exhibitions can be thematic, retrospective or otherwise. A proposal includes an outline for an exhibition describing the idea, well thought out and presented with visuals. The proposals are reviewed by a committee of League members, and are selected based on the exhibition idea. Once a proposal is approved and scheduled the committee does not interfere with the integrity of the exhibition.
The Ohio Arts Council helped fund this program with state tax dollars to encourage economic growth, educational excellence and cultural enrichment for all Ohioans.
