Thavibu Gallery is pleased to present the exhibition "Abstract - Oil and
Lacquer" by the two Vietnamese artists Pham An Hai and Cong Kim Hoa. Cong Kim Hoa is one of Vietnam's most well known female lacquer artists.
Modern lacquer paintings are unique to Vietnam. Many of Pham An Hai's paintings may be viewed as cityscapes or
landscapes from his home city of Hanoi and its surroundings.
Other countries produce
traditional lacquer ware, but only in Vietnam has the synthesis of
traditional lacquer techniques and modern paintings been successful.
Although most of Cong Kim Hoa's paintings seem abstract, it is often possible to
discern faces and elements from Vietnamese life in Hoa's lacquer paintings.
In Pham An Hai's paintings, we can discern
houses, buildings and narrow lanes, and also imagine the city in various
seasons or time of the day. Some paintings draw one's attention to Hanoi in
winter or it can be Hanoi in a red light stemming from the evening sun.
Sometimes, there is a tranquil, romantic tinge to the works. At another
level, his cityscapes may also reflect inner landscapes, landscapes of the
soul and heart.
